First, let's delve into "the problem"....This is a great website from the US Centers for Disease Control about obesity rates state-by-state, starting in 1985 and continuing through 2009. Scroll down to and click play above the US map. Prepare to be amazed:

An Intriguing Question

In the above noted study of over 700 obese patients (male and female) undergoing gastric bypass, approximately 50% of patients began regaining weight within 24 months of surgery.  If weight regain is so common among gastric bypass patients (as noted in study above) and other bariatric surgery patients (as noted in multiple other studies in my research thus far), is it financially worth the insurance company's resources to provide it as a benefit among it's covered lives?  What can the insurance company do/provide to assist in maintaining weight loss after bariatric surgery?  What responsibility must the patient take for maintaining weight loss after bariatric surgery?
